Philosophy
My
coaching philosophy is built around providing an environment of educating
people to be the best athletes they want to be. I believe that education is
power, and facilitates an athlete to understand more about why, what and how
they are doing the sport, and to understand why, what and how they need to
train and race in order to achieve their goals.

In this context my role as coach is to provide the necessary stimulus in
terms of the “right” information at the right time, the right training
direction, support, motivation, encouragement, etc, to achieve the desired
outcomes. My role as coach also operates across the spectrum of physical
preparation, mental, tactical and emotional aspects of performance.
My goal as a coach is for my athletes to be able to have memorable
experiences and memories from their involvement in sport, from training and
racing. If this happens it will mean they have also achieved their sporting
goals.
Within my philosophy is teaching the athletes the rules of the sport,
educating them on etiquette and respect towards other athletes and sports
officials, instilling morals and ethics of sports competition and fair play.
My wish is for my athletes to compete hard and fair, and to be good people.

How
Coaching Works
Coaching
is a partnership. The best training program is one that's doable because it
fits into your life; your commitments, capabilities, constraints,
preferences, etc...and still helps you work towards your goals. Without a
partnership - and working these things out - you'll be banging your head
against the wall pretty quickly...which doesn't achieve anything. I aim to
coach the whole person, not just the athlete.
Don't forget,
however, that every goal involves sacrifices and compromises. The more
worthwhile and motivating the goal, the easier it is make these...but you're
the one who has to decide and accept what it will take to achieve this.
Training then fits in accordingly.
Coaching
Process
There's no
pre-set formula to coaching, we're creating a partnership after all. But
here's a general approach:
o Let's get to know each other, and for me
to learn about you as a person, your goals, dreams, constraints, strengths,
current training situation, etc. The more I know the better we can create a
program you can do...via discussion and written questions.
o Then we'll work out a schedule that works
for you, fits into your life, and is one you can maintain.
o Next we'll work out the specifics of each
session - what to do, how to do it, guidelines, etc.
o Where we can we'll align training to
known, scheduled group sessions.
o After that, just do it!! We'll look at
how you move...whether swimming, biking or running. We want to get you
moving as efficiently as possible - basic technique underpins all
performance.
o At training, we adapt the scheduled
session to how the athlete is feeling and performing. Sometimes we end up
doing a bit less, or a bit more, or something different...so the training
adapts to the athlete.

Where Do I Coach?
I prefer to
coach people in person, face-to-face...even if it's only once a week /
fortnight / month. It's just really valuable being able to keep up-to-date
when you see athletes at training, doing training. The feedback loop is more
complete.
Specifically, I coach in inner-Melbourne at some regular sessions (below),
and ad hoc sessions as scheduled.
Mon - 6pm at the tan (run
drills & circuit)
- meet
opposite The Shrine.
Tue & Thur - 5:45pm at the tan (run)
- meet at the Pillars of Wisdom.
Sat - 8am at rotating venue (run)
Sat - 4pm at MSAC (swim)
Sun - 8am at rotating venue (run)
I coach individually and with our Love the Run group (www.lovetherun.com.au)
as the head run coach. The run sessions above are scheduled Love the Run group sessions...but anyone is welcome.
