King Island Imperial 20 running race
7-8th March, 2009

Read the story from the trip here.

Currie Harbour

A small harbour that's difficult to navigate a boat into, especially in rough weather.

Currie Lighthouse

Quite an imposing lighthouse and impressive in it's location and stature over the harbour.

Currie lighthouse history

It's quite old and significant.

More Currie Harbour

Currie is the main town on King Island, although the supply ships come into Grassy port on the other side.

Crayfish boats

A lot of cray fishing here, and other fishing boats, operate from this harbour.

Kelp farmers

The kelp is picked up from the beach, dried out, ground down and shipped to Scotland to make food products from.

Old cray pots

Beyond use, these have been collected and lined up here.

British Admiral Beach

Named after the ship that sank here, this was the location for two little events.

Start of the predicted time run

Run over 2.7km, out and back, we had to predict our time and run without a watch. Closest to predicted time won.

Predicted time run

A really nice beach, very exposed to the wind.

Nearing the end.

I missed my predicted time by about 20secs.

The "Free Willies" run for ladies

Only 6 ladies lined up, won a short t*t from the lady on the left...

The men lining up

Checking the opposition out, although since it was cold there wasn't much to be seen this afternoon.

The men's "Free Willies" race

Run straight towards the now clothed ladies who were cheering loudly!!

Sunset on Kind Island

A nice sunset.

Sunrise on race morning

At Naracoopa on the other side of the island.

The Erection Crew

These are the guys who erected the finish line area in Currie.

The start venue

Tea, coffee and breakfast available inside, and the handicap start outside.

Off goes a runner.

This lady started on 31:00mins. I started at 79:00mins.

The start line

We were each called to the line as our handicap start time arrived.

Post race recovery

In Currie harbour, a relaxing soak followed by much banter on the grassy bank of the harbour.

Post race analysis

Nice green grass is very rare so we wallowed around here for a while.

Awards dinner

Surrounded by the mens 2n4 & 3rd placegetters, and the womens 1st place. All quality!!

The awards stage

They set up the finish arch on stage.

Race video

A great collection of runners along the course route was shown at the end of the awards.

The dance floor

It took a long time to get started...and then the teenage DJs kept arguing about what songs to play. It all died badly...

Post race morning

On the Currie pier seeking out lobsters from the fishing boats.

Micky, Ricky and Shirley

My hosts for the weekend were absolutely wonderful - so generous, friendly and salt-of-the-earth nice people.

View from the pilot's seat

I got to ride in the cockpit on the return flight - this is what is looks like.

Our captain

A young guy, and co-pilot on the right. They did a great job and were fascinating to talk to.

Point Neapean

What a special view as we flew stright up Port Phillip Bay.

Coming in to land

Check out the jet still taking off from the runway as we approach it!! This was an amazing joyride.
